Best Mother’s Day Presents – What Are You Planning For That Special Day?

Mother’s Day!

Hello

Mother’s Day, a day to pay honor and respect to that special someone who cares for and nurtures you. I don’t believe the need for a mother ends when we reach adulthood. In fact, I know it doesn’t. I valued the presence and advice of my own mother well into my adult years. 🙂

Best Mother's Day Presents - What Are You Planning For That Special Day? youraromatherapystore.com

One would think that writing an article about Mother’s Day would be an easy task. Funny thing, it really wasn’t. My mind was flooded with memories of my own mother (she is gone now). This was not a negative thing, but it was a bit of an emotional thing. In addition to that, a young lady that I have known for many years just became a mother in the midst of writing this post! So, my mind was occupied with various feelings and thoughts centered on this very topic.

Mothers have been celebrated since the beginning of time. Various forms of celebrating motherhood have been around forever. Religious, historical and legendary factors play a role with regard to how and when Mother’s Day is celebrated throughout the world. The commonality in all the different celebrations is the honor and respect that is given to the ones that mother us.

So, if my mother was still alive, I wonder what I would have given her this year. What are the best Mother’s Day presents?

I always research topics that I write about. I came across an interesting story that I thought you might enjoy.

As mentioned, Mother’s Day has been celebrated in one way or another since the beginning of time. The origin of the modern celebration, in North America, is often credited to a woman by the name of Anna Reeves Jarvis.

Anna’s mother was a peace activist who cared for wounded soldiers on both sides of the American Civil War. She also created Mother’s Day Work Clubs to address public health issues. A very generous woman and great humanitarian.

Upon the death of her mother in 1905, Anna Reeves Jarvis wanted to honor her by continuing the work she started and setting aside a day to honor all mothers. Anna started campaigning and by 1914 President Woodrow Wilson signed a proclamation designating Mother’s Day, held on the second Sunday in May, as a national holiday to honor mothers.

As the years passed, Anna became resentful of the holiday as it had become too commercial. By the early 1920s, many companies started to manufacture and sell merchandise related to Mother’s Day. Jarvis believed that the holiday was being misinterpreted and exploited for profit.

According to Jarvis, the point of the holiday was not profit. She argued that people should appreciate and honor their mothers through handwritten letters expressing their love and gratitude, instead of buying gifts and pre-made cards.

As a result of the commercialism, Jarvis organized boycotts of Mother’s Day and threatened to issue lawsuits against the companies involved. Among other acts of disapproval she protested at a candy maker’s convention in Philadelphia and at a meeting of the American War Mothers. Eventually, Jarvis was arrested for disturbing the peace and sent to jail.

Isn’t that an interesting piece of history? I love learning new things!

So, What are the Best Mother’s Day Presents?

In my opinion, most mothers love to spend time with their children. Especially if the children are grown up and no longer live at home. Pop over and visit mom if possible, play one of her favourite games, go for a walk, talk about years gone by, reminisce about the years when you were young and talk about how she took such great care of you. Make her feel special. Although Jarvis may not agree…LOL, take her some chocolates and even a card (you could make one if you feel so inclined, it might be just a little more special).

If you live at home and your mom does the majority of the housework, how about giving her the day off. Make breakfast, lunch, supper, do laundry, etc. I am sure she would love the break.

All mothers are different and what works for one mom may not be the best idea for your mother.

Essential Oils and a Diffuser for Your Mom?

Candies, flowers and cards are lovely, but if you’re looking for something a little different perhaps your mother might like to learn about Aromatherapy. Essential oils are becoming more popular worldwide. There are a ton of health benefits and it’s a great deal of fun to learn how to mix and blend these oils together to create awesome aromas.

If your mother has a diffuser already, she might like another one! You can’t have too many! It’s pretty convenient to have one for each floor of the house.

Essential Oil Diffuser

I love Aromatherapy. I practice it on a daily basis and I know it has helped me both physically and mentally. If you are unfamiliar with essential oils, here is a list of some basic ones that are great to start with. These oils will provide a wide array of benefits and have numerous blending options.

Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) Lavender is the number one essential oil to start with. It offers an incredible variety of uses, including antimicrobial and antidepressant properties. You can’t go wrong with Lavender, it’s a must-have!

Lemon (Citrus limon) Lemon is another highly useful essential oil for the home. It is a great choice for cleaning solutions and diffusion, especially during cold and flu season. It has antimicrobial and antiseptic properties. The aroma is very uplifting and energizing.

Eucalyptus (Eucalyptus globulus) It’s a powerful expectorant and has been used for thousands of years for respiratory ailments. Known for its antiseptic, antibacterial, antiviral, and antifungal properties.

Tea Tree (Melaleuca alternifolia) Tea Tree essential oil is useful because it can effectively fight bacteria, viruses, and fungi.

Peppermint (Mentha x piperita) Peppermint, like lemon, is a very energizing oil. It can help with digestion, works as a decongestant and an expectorant. It’s probably best known for its ability to soothe headaches.

There are many essential oils to choose from, Frankincense and Ginger are also wonderful. This list is just a suggestion, and the benefits listed here are only the tip of the iceberg. These oils can be blended together, used in a diffuser and/or applied topically (always dilute oils with a carrier oil before applying to the skin).

The art of Aromatherapy can be very rewarding and creative, not to mention very healthy. Perhaps your mother would enjoy a diffuser and some oils this year for Mother’s Day. I’m sure Anna Jarvis would approve of this present…LOL

My mother passed away several years ago. The use of essential oils and aromatherapy was not mainstream in her day as it is now (in Canada). If she was alive now, I feel she would have really enjoyed diffusing oils in her home. She always enjoyed nature, flowers and plants. If she was still with us, I would have given her something essential oil related, perhaps a new diffuser or a new oil.

What am I Doing for Mother’s Day?

I am doing something quite unique this year. I have two lovely daughters that are treating me to a “float tank” session. I can hardly wait! I have never experienced something like this and I am thrilled to try it.

In case you are not familiar with float tanks/rooms, let me describe what it is.

It’s a large tub or small pool filled with water and a great deal of salt. When you lay down in it, your body is suspended and the environment is typically void of outside sound and light; it’s really relaxing. The place I am going to provides optional starlight ceilings, I wonder if I will like the star lights or choose the complete dark. 🙂

I hope everyone has a fabulous Mother’s Day. If you are fortunate enough to still have your mother around, spoil her with some of your time! Make a memory for both of you!

In honor of my own mother, I have featured her image in the picture at the top of this article! 🙂

Thanks for spending some time with me here. Please leave a comment in the box provided below, I REALLY like hearing from people. I hope you all have a fabulous Mother’s Day!

Take good care and stay happy and healthy!

About the Artisan

Tara lives in Grande Prairie, Alberta, Canada. She is a mother, grandmother and business woman. Her love of nature, and in particular stones, inspired her to create many one of a kind (OOAK) pieces of jewelry throughout her life. She gifted these treasures to her friends and family.

Due to health issues, she retired from her full time job in the fall of 2014. It was at this point she founded Blue World Treasures. This allowed her the opportunity to continue bringing in an income while doing something she loves…making OOAK quality jewelry!

Tara makes each and every piece of jewelry with her own hands, ensuring that every unique piece meets her own high standard of workmanship. She says that every day is a delight as she gets to express her love of nature and the Creator in her wearable art pieces.

“None of my pieces are the same since I use all natural items and nature doesn’t duplicate anything either. I find and tumble, polish and drill most of my own stones and the beads I use are generally artisan beads or high quality Czech glass or Swarovski crystal. I prefer the soft glow of nature to the “Bling” of mass produced items.”

My Thoughts

I’m always on the lookout for unique essential oil jewelry. When I came across these gorgeous pieces I was hooked. I contacted the artisan. She actually lives quite close to me. I wanted to reach out and let her know that I was showcasing her work in this article. She was very pleasant and warm-hearted in her response to being contacted.  🙂

I love that these Diffuser Necklaces are not only beautiful but that they are essential oil diffusers as well. I am an avid essential oil user. I strongly believe in the many benefits they can offer us both mentally and physically. How great is it that we can just add a few drops of oil to this necklace and take the benefits with us where ever we go.

Choosing the best oils to use in your Diffuser Necklace will depend on the effect you want to achieve. Some “general purpose” oils for promoting relaxation, or calming an anxious mind include Lavender and Chamomile. Sandalwood essential oil is also an excellent oil for general purposes as it can help address a variety of common ailments. Lavender essential oil is probably the best oil to start with if you are new to Aromatherapy as it is gentle and mild.
