Aromatherapy Essential Oils – 30 Reasons You Should Be Using Them (Part 2 of 2)

15 More Reasons Why I Love Essential Oils

Hi,

Aromatherapy Essential OIls - 30 Reasons You Should Be Using Them (Part 2 of 2)

Welcome to the conclusion of the two part article called Aromatherapy Essential Oils – 30 Reasons You Should Be Using Them. Last week I wrote about the first 15 reasons I think essential oils could make a positive impact in your life. This week’s article will be the conclusion with the final 15 reasons.

If you didn’t have an opportunity to read Part 1, feel free to go back and check it out. 🙂

I am an avid user of essential oils. I love all the benefits they provide. If you don’t currently use them, perhaps you will be inspired to start your aromatherapy journey. If you do use essential oils, perhaps you will find a thing or two of interest here.

Let’s get started with the final 15 reasons that I think essential oils are AWESOME! 🙂

1. Allergy Relief

A girl with seasonal allergies.

Many people purchase over-the-counter remedies to ease the discomfort of seasonal allergy symptoms. In some cases these options are necessary, but not always. Did you know many essential oils contain properties that can ease the symptoms of seasonal allergies?

Some oils that have been known to help are Lavender, Eucalyptus, Rosemary, Peppermint, Bergamot, Lemon and Tea Tree.

For more details read Essential Oils and Allergies – Seasonal Allergy Relief.

2. Clean and Purify the Air You Breathe

Diffusing essential oils in a diffuser can help clean the air in our homes and offices. Many essential oils have antibacterial and antimicrobial components which means they can help rid the air of harmful bacteria that make us sick. Tea Tree, Lemon, Eucalyptus, Cinnamon and Lavender are examples of oils that can help in this way.

Several studies have been performed to confirm this. Here’s some research you may be interested in:

3. Versatile

I love how many uses my oils have. Let’s think about Lemon oil for example, I can clean my house with it, use it in a diffuser to clean the air, boost my energy level, relieve nausea, improve digestion, boost my immune system, relieve a cough…the list goes on.

Almost all (if not all) essential oils have more than one use. I think this is just fantastic! Essential oils are very versatile!

4. Dreams, Nightmares, Night Terrors (and Sleep)

Of all our senses, our sense of smell is one of the strongest. A particular aroma can quickly bring on a flood of memories and even change a person’s mood.

Sweet Dreams

When we smell something, a message is sent through our nose (olfactory nerves/fibers) to the limbic system and the amygdala. These are the places in our brain that are in charge of our mood, emotions and memory.

Since everything we experience can affect our dreams, it is therefore logical to believe that diffusing aromas that evoke peaceful thoughts and emotions will increase the likelihood of good dreams and a restful sleep.

5. Essential Oils and Modern Medication

I feel so fortunate to live in the modern world with access to the wonderful advances in the medical field. I would probably be dead if it wasn’t for the progress made in this area (this is the case for many people). With that being said, I also feel natural solutions are a very important aspect to my overall health.

I diffuse essential oils on a regular basis. I do this to keep my immune system in top condition. One reason for this is because I am allergic to three common antibiotics (maybe more). I would rather utilize the natural benefits of essential oils (proactively) than have to start a course of antibiotics when I get sick. I haven’t had any allergic reactions to essential oils thus far. So, for me, I feel essential oils are safer.

I use EOs for cough, cold, flu, anxiety, hormonal issues, relaxation, etc. As I said before, I am grateful to have access to the brilliant and technologically advanced medical system available to me, but natural remedies are always my first choice when it comes to my general overall health.

6. Digestion

Yes, essential oils can be used to help digestion too! Ginger, Lemon, Peppermint and Rosemary are known to help in this area. If you are having difficulty with digestion you may like to try diffusing a few drops of these oils in a diffuser or make a massage lotion to rub on your belly.

7. Laundry

Laundry Detergent

Essential oils can be used when doing the laundry. If you have sensitive skin like me, then you likely purchase unscented laundry soap. Did you know you can add a few drops of your favourite essential oil to liquid detergent? The amount you add will depend on your personal preference and size of the detergent bottle. Add a few drops at a time and shake bottle. This will add a nice scent in the wash.

Did you know you can make your own Fabric Softener with EOs? Watch for an upcoming article with more details on this topic. 🙂

8. Essential Oils and the Flu

As we know, flu viruses are always changing and mutating and this makes it challenging for researchers to develop effective medications and vaccines. This is one of the reasons that natural remedies are becoming increasingly popular. I believe researchers are doing the best they can and I get my flu shot every year!

Traditional healthcare practitioners have used essential oils for thousands of years to treat different ailments, so in addition to my flu shot I take advantage of the old traditions as well.

Some essential oils that have significant anti-influenza virus properties are:

Bergamot oil – effective against flu viruses as a vapor after just 10 minutes of exposure.

Eucalyptus oil – shows anti-viral activity as a vapor.

Tea Tree oil – is effective against the flu virus within 5 to 10 minutes of exposure.

Lemon balm – known to prevent the avian influenza (bird flu) virus from reproducing.

9. Nausea

When I feel sick to my stomach I reach for my Ginger essential oil. It works great! It can be diffused, rubbed onto pressure points at your forehead and wrists, or even rubbed onto your stomach (always dilute with a carrier oil before using topically).

Other oils that are known to be helpful when feeling nauseous are Lavender, Peppermint, Cardamom and Fennel.

10. Essential Oils and Meditation

Meditating person

Many people practice meditation as a mind-body complementary medicine. It can reduce stress, depression, pain and anxiety. Check out the following list of oils and how they can enhance your meditation practice:

  • Frankincense helps clear the mind of distractions.
  • Lavender and Jasmine are known to decrease negative thoughts and improve overall mood
  • Peppermint is known to help eliminate body pain. Meditation typically requires you to stay in one position for a period of time. If you experience pain in your back, muscles, joints, neck or other body parts, try diffusing Peppermint or use topically to ease some discomfort.

For more details on this topic read Best Essential Oils for Meditation.

11. Arthritis

Essential oils can be used as an alternative or complementary treatment for arthritis pain. Some oils that help ease the discomfort of arthritis are:

  • Peppermint works as an analgesic and an anesthetic. It relaxes muscles and soothes inflammation and pain.
  • Frankincense is an analgesic and has anti-inflammatory properties.
  • Lavender can help to relieve painful swelling and inflammation.
  • Eucalyptus is an analgesic and has anti-inflammatory properties.

Each essential oil provides an amazing amount of benefits, more than I have listed here. It is good to remember that many oils help with the secondary symptoms of dealing with chronic pain such as depression and anxiety.

12. Muscle Pain

Most of us experience sore muscles from time to time. Maybe you’ve had a long work out at the gym or you spent a long day bending and stretching in the garden. Did you know many essential oils can quickly ease this pain? Some examples are Ginger, Black Pepper, Peppermint, Marjoram and Rosemary.

When I have sore muscles I reach for my premixed blend of Rosemary and Peppermint. This is how I make it:

Using a 10 ml Roller Bottle, I add 7 drops of Peppermint and 5 drops of Rosemary. Then I fill the remainder of the bottle with Jojoba carrier oil. Add the roller and cap and shake well. I roll this awesome combination on my sore muscles and if desired I can use it as a massage oil too! This is only one example of the essential oils that can alleviate sore muscle pain.

Many oils can provide relief and there are a ton of combinations that work well.

13. Smoking Cessation

Essential oils will not magically eliminate all cravings and withdrawal symptoms when you are trying to kick the habit but they can be used as a complementary addition to other medications or strategies.

Black Pepper, Basil, Frankincense, Spikenard and Vetiver essential oils are thought to decrease cravings related to cigarette smoking.

14. Boost Energy

I love my coffee, especially first thing in the morning. I often drink one more at some point during the day, especially if it is a work day. But there are times when I just don’t want more coffee, yet I want an energy boost. At these times I use essential oils in my diffuser or my portable Roller Bottle. You guessed it! EOs can even boost your energy level!

There are many essential oils that can help in this area. Some even help improve focus and motivation. Lemon, Orange, Cinnamon and Peppermint are some of the best oils to increase energy. They can be added to a diffuser or used in a portable Roller Bottle. Use separately or blend together for increased benefits. 🙂

15. Fun

Yes, you read it right! Essential oils can be FUN! I have a blast learning about aromatherapy and all the wonderful things essential oils can do for me.

I love mixing and blending oils together and making “potions”. Yes, I call them that, for fun! LOL

So, yes, essential oils have a fun aspect to them. 🙂

Conclusion

Thanks for spending a few minutes with me and reading Aromatherapy Essential Oils – 30 Reasons You Should Be Using Them (Part 2 of 2). I hope these two articles have given you something to consider when it comes to incorporating these awesome oils into your life.

There is one more thing I wanted to add, it is a little excerpt that I have used in previous articles about negative and positive ions.

Ultrasonic Diffusers Produce Negative Ions – Is This a Good Thing?

Yes, it is a good thing!

Our bodies have a magnetic field. This field is made of negative and positive ions. In our modern world we are exposed to an overabundance of positive ions (also called “free radicals”). Free radicals have unpaired electrons. They are highly reactive and they take electrons from our healthy cells to neutralize their own charge. This can cause cellular damage to our bodies. Cell phones, computers, televisions, electrical equipment, some foods and pollution produce these “free radicals”.

Beautiful Waterfall

What are we to do? How can we counteract these positive ions with negative ions? If you are lucky enough to live by an ocean, a waterfall, or even in the mountains then you have access to an abundance of negative ions in nature. Most of us are not fortunate enough to live in such an environment.

There is something we can do to counteract these positive ions with negative ions. We can use an Ultrasonic Diffuser! This is good news! Negative ions are produced in the diffuser when the small ceramic disc vibrates the water and creates the vapor that we breathe in. Awesome! If you choose to add essential oils to your diffuser, the ultrasonic vibrations will break the oils into tiny micro particles and disperse them in the mist as well.

  1. Thanks for the info. I did not know about tea tree oil and the effect it has on the flu germs. I’ll add this to my oil list and natural medications when I see the flu around my house.

Questions: is there a favorite combination of oils to diffuse for focus that you have used?

    1. Hi Eddie,
Thanks for stopping by. Essential oils are certainly very handy at boosting our immune system (especially around the cold and flu season). I diffuse my oils on a regular basis year round. I like to switch it up and use a variety of different oils. There are so many to choose from.
Thanks for your question about my favourite combination of oils to use for focus. There are three that I use quite often when I want to sit down and focus on a special project or do some writing. They are Rosemary, Peppermint and Lemon. Sometimes I use two of them or all three. Sometimes, I even use them separately. They are all great. I would like to mention a little something about Rosemary, it is known to help our memory, it is has been known for thousands of years. I believe the Greeks used to use it, there is some history behind this oil. Some people do not like the scent of Rosemary so it is often blended with something else (like the Peppermint or Lemon). These are my favourites for concentration, focus and memory. I hope this information helps. Thanks again for your question.
      Have a wonderful day!
